Daily Vegas ~ When Halloween costumes go too far...
I am a newer parent. My son is only 16.5 months old, so I am not going to pretend to be an expert in the ways of parenting by any means, but in recent years I have noticed a trend in costumes. Children as young as my son, dressed up as what I can only assume is something their parents think is funny. It really makes me wonder, when did Halloween become a reason to flaunt bad parenting choices??
Recently we spent an evening at the Haunted Harvest. While walking in, my sister in law pointed out the costumes of the kids in front of us. The children were probably about 10, 6, and 3 years old. They had dressed like characters from the recent movie kick-ass. Now this film was rated R, so really these children were dressed as characters from movies they shouldn't have seen.
Okay, maybe the 10 year-old dressed as Kick-Ass (and that is a big maybe) would have seen this movie, but dressing your 3 year old as Red Mist, and 6 year old as Hit-Girl? These are not your typical superheros. They are vigilante wannabe superheros who use extreme violent measures to stop the "bad guys".
(Note - I have not seen this movie. I got my information from my sister in law who is a huge movie buff.)
Have you been on Photobucket lately. Take a look at the current number 1 voted costume. I know some may disagree with me here (which is fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinions), but really this child is not much older than my son. Why is it funny to dress him up as a serial killing doll complete with bloody knife?? I am choosing not to post a picture of this "Chucky" costume for the simple reason that he is an innocent party in this mess of a Halloween costume.
Finally this last costume isn't for children, it is for "adults." But really - when did Elmo become sexy? And I would imagine that the people buying this costume mostly have children who like Sesame Street, which really? Sexy Elmo? Do I need to get further into this?
I'm not even going to get into the teenage sexy costumes. The things I saw on some 12 year olds in the past few years, I wouldn't even wear as an adult. At least throw a pair of leggings underneath.
I fully understand Halloween is a holiday to have fun, let loose, be silly. But there are better ways to dress your children up than vigilante murders, Serial killing Dolls. And if you plan on being Sexy Elmo, do me a favor, please don't trick or treat in it.
Sorry, I will step off my soap box now. It doesn't happen often, but every once in a while I get to a point where I just need to get something off my chest. Now should I have a teenage daughter one day, I am sure we will have many conversations on appropriate clothing. It just makes me sad when there are so many sweet and funny costumes for little children, that some costumes just go too far.

I hear you. No need to be dressing your little one up like that at all.
I agree. What happened to clean fun in costumes for Halloween. Every adult woman costume I have seen only reaches mid thigh and dips down to the navel practically. This kids costumes are becoming just as worse.
You couldn't have said it better!!! I have an eleven year old daughter and I cannot tell you how hard it is to find a costume that doesn't make me want to lock her in her room for Halloween LOL!
Halloween should be fun for everyone...some things have definitely been taken too far!
I agree too. Oh did you see the sexy Big Bird costume? Sure you don't want to dress up as the Sesame Street gang together? haha. I'm kidding of course. I saw those at Target with a friend and we laughed pretty hard cause it's really silly that someone would dress up as a children's tv show character that has been recreated to be "sexy". Chuckie is just creepy :/
My hubsnad and I were just talking about this the other night! We live right near Salem, Mass so Halloween is BIG here. We don't go in to the city at night-too scary! But costumes have gotten so so so innapropriate. Just another reason to slut it up really. Our poor daughter is going to be disappointed when she gets to that age and tries to get away with outfits like that!
I completely agree with you! Costumes are getting completely out of hand. I actually had some kid come to our house last year with saggy pants to his knees, baggy shirt, huge fake chains around his neck, and a backwards cap. My husband asked him what he was supposed to be and the kid said "I'm a thug...you aint know?!" I wanted to fall through the front porch when I heard that!
I am now a new follower from the TTA. Hope you can return the follow.

I recently saw another blog with photos of her kids and the little girl (probably 10 or so) had a genie outfit on with bare midriff...
Cute costume! I'm your new follower here.
Come Check me out with my Tuesday Tag-Along here
Just wanted to throw in that there is also a "sexy girl scout' costume. There are two, actually. one that is a brownie (brown vest) and one that is a junior (green sash). brownies are 1-3rd or 4th grade depending on the group. So probably 10 years old at most, but typically more like 6-8. I just was so disgusted that anyone would ever think about making that into a sexy halloween costume.
I completely agree. I see no reason to put children (babies!) in disturbing costumes, and I disgusts me how halloween has become an excuse for girls to dress skanky... Especially young girls. Though maybe I'm just a prude because I disagree with putting little girls in bikinis too. I think girls are becoming sexualized WAY too young!
Haha - I was slightly concerned when I hit post I was going to have some one tell me I was over reacting and I was a prude... Glad to know others feel the same way! The girl scout costumes aren't cool either. And I totally agree with the bikini thing. Why when there are so many cute 1 -piece bathing suits. Thanks for the support all!
:)
I am in total agreement with you! I really question a lot of judgement out there. It seems parents tend to be more of a "friend" to their children these days then the "authority" figure they should be. I also agree with the above poster - I am so against my little girls wearing bikini's...I see no reason why they would need to wear something like that.
Ha, so anyway, I will get off my soapbox too! Thank you for following my blog ~ I am definitely following yours too!

This is one of the several topics that I disagree on with most parents. I don't find that Elmo costume to be offensive or even sexy at all, and I would trick or treat in it - if I actually liked it.
My son wanted a Chucky costume, and I would have got him one if I had found it on time, but I didn't so instead he is going as an undead biker. My other son has a skeletal mask that has an attached pump to make it appear as though blood is dripping down his face.
My Daughter picked out a super cute Princess costume, girly, frilly, and the type of costume that any prudish parent would love. If I had chosen for her I would have chosen something like a Punk Witch or Vampire - My two year old is going as a Spider Fairy. A black and purple tutu style costume with wings.
And for myself, I'll be going as a sexy vampire, courtesy of Eden Fantasys.
My take? Appropriate clothing is for every other day of the year. Halloween is about CELEBRATING THE DEAD, not dressing up like a fluffy puppy.
Well, that is the beauty of being American. Agree to disagree. I don't know many Eden Fantasy costumes that are appropriate to wear around children, but I also don't know you or your costume, so I can't really form an opinion.
I think my post was more about age appropriate costuming, and not saying that a witch or a vampire or even a grim reaper being not okay. I think those are fine.
Celebrating the Dead doesn't have to be about dressing inappropriate, which is what Halloween has become.
Punk Witch or Vampire or Princess, it is all fine, as long as it is age appropriate, and not "sexy" or excessively "violent". I think Spider Fairy sounds cute and creative.
I don't think you need to add violence to costumes like excessive blood and knives or guns. That isn't really celebrating the dead either, that is to me more promoting violence.
My fluffy bear is going to have just as your spider fairy, but the best part is both of those costumes are age appropriate.
Thanks for the reply Emily!
I think my costume is Ok for around the children. It does cover everything and has a long skirt (Voluptuous Vampire, will be posting on my blog tomorrow if you care to see).
It's true, I didn't mean to say it should be about dressing inappropriate though it is the one day of year that I think it is perfectly OK and I let them choose their own costumes once they are able to. (I also do not allow bikinis for my daughter and won't until she is old enough to get a job and buy her own!)
My Daughter tends to like the appropriate costumes - she has also been a Cat, Winnie the Pooh, and a witch. My boys like the violent ones, as long as they don't act violently while wearing it.
I like the last part you wrote - a lot of parents don't do that anymore.
I think it is really all about teaching your children and talking to them. And that is good parenting! :) I will check out your costume. Hope you all have a great Halloween, and thanks for voicing another opinion. :)
