Toddler Talk Thursday ~ Week 10 (Halloween)

Welcome to the tenth week of Toddler Talk Thursday! Where Family and Life in Las Vegas, Crazy about my Baybah, and My Life as a Sippy Cup Mom talk all things Toddler!

Toddler Talk Thursday was created as a place for moms and dads of toddlers to come together over a weekly topic and share ideas, go-to toys, or products. It is a great way to meet other bloggers of toddlers. Each week the topic will be different; we invite you to link up, share your weekly Toddler Talk!!

Each week the hosts will travel around to each blog that links up, and pick an idea, story, or picture they think was a great example of that weeks topic. In order to qualify for this you need to blog about this week's topic, and follow the hosts. Comments letting us know you are participating are always great too. This week’s topic is Halloween

Have you ever thought about doing a Green Halloween? Since Squishy was born, I have tried to do things in a greener way. I would love to show my child how to respect the world he lives in.

Here are some green tips we will be using this Halloween, and other Halloweens to come.

1. Use re-usable trick-or-treat bags. Pillowcases are a great way to do this. You can also decorate them with your child and re-use them year after year. Also use shakeable or rechargeable flashlights instead of battery operated ones - you can get a really cute one at EcoMom.


2. Consider doing a costume swap with friends or family or making your costumes using materials bought at thrift stores or with items you already own. Last year I made Squishy's Football costume, and would love to make his costumes in the future. In fact that is one of the main reasons I am learning to sew this year. (Clearly I don't know how to sew as you can tell from this picture!!)





3. Be conscious with the candy you give out. There are many eco-friendly options when it comes to candy, but if you aren't into going that route, buy your candy in bulk to eliminate packaging waste. Or consider giving out something children can use again like fun pencils, erasers, or small boxes of crayons.

4. If possible walk - don't drive. Sure I understand that some people don't live in an area that they feel comfortable trick-or-treating in, but last year I was astounded to see the number of vehicles driving from house to house following their children as they went door to door. Park your car, walk with your children. It is not only better for the environment, but also better for the your body!! (Okay, at least it will burn off a few calories before you raid that candy stash...)

5. Don't buy decorations you will just throw away. You may as well just throw away your money. Buy things you can use again and again. Enjoy pulling them out with your family. Each year you can decorate together, and let your child find new places to put old decorations. This could become a great fun family tradition.

6. Use these tools year round. Holidays are a great time to start living more green. Green living can help you save money, and build family traditions. Continue these tips through out the year to continue to teach your child how to love the earth we live in.
