Why I use a Cloth Diaper Service

The day got ahead of me BIG TIME.  I wrote this for a guest spot on Greening Sam and Avery (thanks again Abbie for having me), but I thought I would share this again here.

Why I use a cloth diaper service.

Hi, my name is Emily and I use a cloth diaper service.  No, I am not lazy, no, I am not rich, and yes, I did my homework.

When Squishy was 4 weeks old, the Hubs and I went to a 4th of July celebration in the park.  We sat down, and while the Hubs stayed with the baby, I went off to get some food.  When I came back there was another young couple with a baby close to Squishy’s age.  My Hubs told me that they owned a cloth diaper service.  We talked a bit about that, I took their card, and pretty much woke up the next day and started researching cloth diapering.

I guess I didn’t look into it before I had Squishy, because I thought it was all rubber pants and safety pins.  Little did I know there was a whole world of cloth diapers out there.  My Hubs is a stats kind of guy.  He wanted to know the black and white of it.  So I researched, and posted on a community board.  Everyone told me diaper services were a waste of money, and was the lazy person’s way to cloth diaper.  But if that was the case, why was what I was reading was telling me differently?  Here is why using a cloth diaper service was the best option for us.

ENVIRONMENT:
Using a diaper service is one of the greenest ways to cloth diaper.  The services use extremely high efficiency machines.  They use less water and waste less fuel by washing a lot of diapers at once. They use a specifically formulated soap system, and a PH-balanced wash cycle that is more extensive than those used for hospital linens.  The soaps are fragrance free, biodegradable, and phosphate free.

The routes are designed and laid out to use the least amount of driving time and gas possible.  Water where I live is getting to be pretty scarce, and isn’t exactly cheap.  In fact I don’t ever remember paying near as much for water in Chicago as we do in Las Vegas.  By using a service I feel we are really reducing our carbon footprint as best we can in the area we live.

CONVENIENCE:
Not laziness.  My husband is deployed frequently for his job.  And until recently we didn’t have any family in the area.  We were both worried that there would be days were I wouldn’t be feeling well, or Squish would need extra attention, and laundry would be the last thing on my mind.  While I can always find another outfit for us to wear, not having a clean diaper is a bit of an issue.  Yes, this wouldn’t happen all the time, but it was a thought.  Also as a single mom 1/3 – 1/2 of the year, I honestly knew I was going to have enough on my plate, adding washing diapers to that list could have easily put me over.

MONEY:
Yes, washing your own cloth diapers is the most cost effective way to cloth diaper, but using a service will save you money.  Typically, children who are cloth diapered potty train up to a year earlier than children who wear disposables.  And in the beginning when they are first born, it seems like they poop every two minutes.  So you are in essence saving money at the beginning and end of your diapering days.

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS:
I really liked the fact that the company was run by a husband and wife team.  I liked that they saw a need for something, and got it taken care of.  I liked talking to them, and the way the answered my questions.  I liked the fact that our money was going to a locally owned business instead of somewhere ½ way around the world.

THE EMILY FACTOR:
I may or may not be known to start something and then decide it isn’t right for me.  I know – it is an awful personality trait.  I wish I wasn’t known for that, but I am.  So the Hubs wasn’t ready to shell out a whole bunch of money to start a stash only to find out that CDing wasn’t something we were going to be able/want to do full time or at all.  So it made sense to at least try the service since it was the least expensive way to go.  Yes, there are places that have trials of different kinds of cloth diapers for you to use.  But honestly, two weeks isn’t enough time for me to decide if I like something or not.  If I love it, I know right away, but if I am unsure, it takes time to figure out why.

These were the reasons we decided to go with the diaper service, there were smaller reasons too, but these 4 was enough black and white to make the decision.  And let me tell you, I am so glad we did.

The company delivers the diapers in a biodegradable trash bag, which we than use to line the diaper pail. The diapers come off, and go right into the pail.  No rinsing or soaking, no extra work for us.  They do get a little stinky towards the end of the week, but I just pop an extra biodegradable, completely edible deodorizing disk in, and no more stinky.

The diapers are delivered right to our front door in the middle of the night.  Put the old ones out, and new ones magically appear.  It’s like the diaper fairy comes and hauls away the poop so you don’t have to.
If we ever need more diapers, they get delivered with in 24 hours, no charge.  If we have any issues, like my heavy wetter issue, they have worked with us to find a solution.

They also recycle the diapers after they have been used too many times, or have stains.  They are sold to housekeeping business, or car washes, and many other businesses to repurpose.
I have not yet had one complaint about our diaper service.  We absolutely made the right choice for us, our son, and the environment.  And his bunz are happier as a result of Happi Bunz diaper service, and we are too!

Spin & Go Touchless Cleaning System ~ Review and Giveaway

I am really good at making messes. My son is even better. His favorite meal time pastime is feeding the dust bunnies on the floor! (Fortunately he also likes to help clean!!) SO EASY - EVEN MY TODDLER CAN DO IT!!

There is only one problem with this - I HATE cleaning. Seriously, I wish constantly I was one of those people who loved to clean, but I just am not that girl. So when Squish has a messy dinner, or we do an ate project like our Recycled Christmas Card Placemats I cringe on the inside knowing I am going to have to mop. I have a steam mop which I love, but there are messes that require more than the Steam Mop. Like paint all over your floor!! When I heard about the Spin & Go Touchless Mop and Wringer System, I knew I wanted to check it out. The number one selling point for me was I wasn't going to have to touch the dirty water anymore!! It was extremely easy to use! I filled my bucket with hot water and vinegar, put the microfiber mop head in the water, then into the spinner. The petal is easy to use, and it is virtually effortless! Now just mop your floor. The mop spins 180 degrees, so it is really easy to mop. I cleaned my whole floor with only one hand, and it was my left hand at that! The final result Sparkling clean floors with minimal effort, and DRY hands!!
Some other fun features include
  • Saves Effort Time and Energy with built in spinning cycle, powers up with a pedal to spin away dirty water, leaving it ready to attack more grime and dirt
  • Spin & Go patented super absorbent MICROFIBER Mop Head with 1,720,000 washable Microfibers gets rid of dirt and grime easily
  • Eco-friendliest Mop ever, no disposable pads to change or touch, its earth friendly and affordable costing only $49.95
  • Lightweight and ultra slim, adjustable for effortless cleaning and hands free wringing/ergonomic design. Great for Seniors too.
  • Best dry mop for dusting hard to reach places, great for cleaning cars too, and it rotates 360 degrees.
I have to admit I actually had fun using the Spin & Go Touchless Mop &Wringer system. And because it was so easy, I mopped my entire house in 1/2 the time it usually takes! Less time cleaning is a win in my book. As a result I am going to rate the Spin & Go Touchless Cleaning System at VERY SQUISHABLE!!

Recycled Christmas Cards Placemats ~ Green So Easy

I keep all the Christmas Cards we get every year. I keep the photo ones, and the regular ones.

This year I noticed my stash of cards was getting a little thick, so I decided we should make a craft from them.

Since I was going to be hosting a Christmas Dinner, doing place mats seemed like a perfect idea!!
I hope you enjoy Squish's Recycled Christmas Card Place Mats!

We started with some Recycled paper. I bought a big roll of it. I plan on using it for all of our wrapping and crafting needs.

I laid it our on our floor, and taped the ends down. I then laid out some colored paper.

I cut some shapes using Christmas Cookies and Sponges. I actually will probably use thicker sponges next time, but in a pinch this worked okay.

I made sure I had a bath ready to go. (We were painting right outside the bathroom too so I was sure to contain the paint to one main area.)

I then stripped the Squish down to his diaper. In the future I will either use a disposable for the craft, or if I am not going to take pictures, I may just let him go at it sans clothing.

I released the Squish, and let him go to town. I got in on the fun too, and we had a blast. The paint was washable and non-toxic.

If you are going to do this project with a child as young as mine, I say embrace the mess and just have fun!

After a bath and a day to let the paper dry, I folded the brown paper in half, and cut it into 3 segments. I then cut those segments in half using the fold as my guide.

The nice thing about this project is it really is a kids project, so perfection isn't needed!

I selected 6 cards from our stash to use for the place mats, cut some ribbon, and glued them on.

I took them to a Office Supply Store, and trimmed them down, then had them laminated in an 11x17 sheet.

I am pretty happy with how they turned out!

I know my guests and family also enjoyed them. I love how you can see Squishy's footprints on them too! Fun times!!

We can use these for years to come. And as we have more children, we can add to our collection of Recycled Christmas Card Place Mats!

Thanks for reading my Recycled tutorial. Green so easy, even a Toddler can do it!

This week I am joining in Skip to My Lou's Made by You Mondays. It is my first time linking up, but I hope it isn't my last!

Green So Easy Even A Toddler Can Do It ~ The Spirit of Giving

Teaching your toddler the spirit of giving is one of the greenest things you can teach. When you instill a love for helping others you are teaching your child organic love, as well as the power of change one person can have. By showing your child how much of a difference one person can make, and you will be raising a child who not only respects the world they live in, but the people they live in it with. This is the perfect age to start teaching them, because toddlers pay attention to EVERYTHING you do.

Your toddler may be too young to understand donating money, so teach them to make giving back a daily part of their lives.

Some of the simple things you can do to teach your child about giving back are:

  • Help someone daily who is struggling. It can be as simple as carrying in the groceries, reaching for something, or holding a door.

  • Watch your friend’s children so they can have a break.

  • Pick up trash on your daily walks.

  • Make dinner for a family when they are sick or overwhelmed or just because.

  • Bake cookies for a nursing home.

  • Donate your gently used clothes and shoes to goodwill. Explain why you are giving away the clothes, and who they will help

  • Packing up old toys and bring them to a shelter or church where other children can enjoy them. Involve your child by helping them pack, and taking them with you when you drop them off.

  • As you start teaching your toddler to save change, you can also start a separate piggy bank to use to buy toys for children who may not get toys for the holidays.

  • Try adopting a child or family during the holidays. Involve your child by letting them pick out the clothes/toys. Talk to them about how it feels to get a present and why giving to others in need will make that child/family feel the same way.

  • Buy canned food items and drop them at church or a food pantry on a pretty regular basis. Again, involve your child with this process so they can understand why you are doing it.

All of these things are pretty simple, and can really help to develop a love of giving back to those who need it most. Talk to your child as you do things. Let them know how much the smile or thank you meant to you. Before you know it, your child will be joining in and giving back to others on their own.

How do you teach your child the spirit of giving? Green So Easy – Even a Toddler Can Do It!

Green so Easy even a Toddler can do It! ~ Week 4 (Nature) Guest Post By Abbie

This week I have been so busy trying to get up all the giveaways I have scheduled before Walking in a Toddler Wonderland starts on Monday, (Don't forget to grab our button for extra entries before the 15th.) dealing with a sick toddler, and being sick myself, and getting ready for SITS Bloggy Boot Camp in St. George Utah, that I didn't have a spare moment to write a post for Green so Easy even a Toddler can do It! Thankfully, Abbie from Greening Sam and Avery had already written a post that I was going to use for when my husband returned home, and she graciously allowed me to post it tonight instead. Thank you Abbie for helping me out!!

Hello Family and Life in Las Vegas Readers! This is actually my second guest post here (I was a part of the amazing Mommy Monster Bash) and I am so excited to be back as a part of this new project that Emily is tackling with her little man. It is not easy to green babies and toddlers but it SO important to start getting your kids outside and appreciating nature as early as possible. If things like hiking, camping, fishing or just exploring the small treasures in nature were not natural to you before kids it may seem like an impossible task when you have to include a baby. But it IS possible and can be so rewarding for everyone!

Here are a few tips, tricks and suggestions that might make getting out on the trail a bit easier for parents of very small children:

1. Start small. The trails and parks that might be exciting for us as parents (national parks, major scenic overlooks, mountain trails, river trails, etc.) are not the place to start with young kids. Those trails can be longer, steeper, skinner and/or more crowded. Instead of hitting up the national park near you check out a county park or state park. These can be found easily online through your states natural resources or recreation department. These parks will be smaller with easier trails and are probably less crowded than the bigger parks. But don't think that just because they are small they won't have amazing things to offer. These parks can have some great hidden treasures, trails and scenery to find.

2. Its not about the destination, the journey is what is important. When you head out on an adventure keep in mind that you might not make it to your original end goal. The best part of the hike might be a rest that you take, sitting on a bench or rock, where you find a frog, see a bug or hear a bird. These little experiences are what will inspire your child to want more, not necessarily the great view at the end point of the hike. But even if you have to end a hike early the time that you spent outside, trying something new is the important part, the first step. And the next time you try it will be that much easier.

3. Patience is key. Kids walk at their own pace and (at least for mine!) the young ones cannot be rushed! You just have to learn to slow yourself down and enjoy their pace. Give yourself the time to look at all the plants around you, notice the little things you might have missed and see what your child is seeing.

Now let's get more specific and practical -(Okay, I need to interject here - how stinking adorable are her daughter's dimples?! Such a beautiful family! - Sorry, back to Abbie!)

4. Get a backpack kid carrier. If you have a baby or very small child and want to get on the hiking trail consider buying a backpack. We have a Chicco baby carrier backpack that was handed down to us years ago from my older sister. We love this one but there are certainly other kinds out there that are great. Check out these companies for some options Lafuma USA, or Mountainsmith. But your local outdoor gear store will probably have options as well.
These backpacks are AWESOME in allowing parents to take very small children out on longer hikes. We started our daughter in hers at just a few months old. She is happy in her pack for hours and she can nap in it! This has been a huge help for us because then we can focus on helping out our 2.5 year old on the trail and not have to worry so much about the baby because we know she will be okay in her pack.

5. Snacks are essential. It is amazing how quickly kids can burn calories and get hungry while they are being active. Healthy snacks like granola, pretzels or dried fruit can be great on the trail and can keep even the crabbiest of kids happy and moving for longer than you might expect.

6. Give your child their own water bottle. If they are old enough to walk on their own and hold a water bottle they are old enough to carry the water bottle. This gives them a little bit of responsibility on the trail and (most importantly) helps you keep track of how much water they are drinking. If you are out for a longer hike or hiking while you are camping it is very important to keep them hydrated!

7. When necessary create a handrail. If you have slightly older kids and are tackling a more difficult area on the trail there is an easy way to create a handrail for your child. Simply grab a nearby stick that is long and have each parent take an end. The child should walk between the two parents holding on to the stick.

8. Play games on the trail. I created a "hiding rabbit" game to do in our yard and we quickly realized how perfect it would be out on the trail. Basically one parent would keep our daughter occupied at a break spot while the other would head down the trail a ways hiding paper rabbit cutouts in the brush along the sides of the trail. When the break is over and we head back out she has a fun new thing to look for and keep her motivated along the trail. This does require extra walking and effort on the parent's part but if you are trying to do a longer hike this might be a good way to end the hike if the child is really worn out.

A game my 2.5 year old made up is called "passed ya". She will play this every time we are out for a walk or bike ride. Super simple. She falls behind on the trial or sidewalk and then runs or speedily walks to pass us and yells "passed ya!". We then repeat the action and pass her. She thinks it is hilarious and could play this forever. We sing songs, play I spy, work on colors, counting and identifying things along the trail. Let your kids be creative, silly and have fun on the trail and you will be amazed at how far they will go.

So that is what I have learned at this point, both from experience and research. I got a few of these ideas from a great book that I found "Kids in the Wild: A Family Guide to Outdoor Recreation" by Cindy Ross and Todd Gladfelter. But even the ideas I didn't come up with we have tested and know that they are solid pieces of advice! With a 2.5 year old and a nine month old we are constantly learning, growing and improving our outdoor adventuring skills. I hope you have found some inspiration with these tips and are ready to hit the trail! If you need more inspiration or help with how to get outside just head over to Greening Sam and Avery.

GoGaga ~ Messenger Bag Review and Giveaway

I met a lot of fabulous people at the ABC Kids Expo, but Jill was one of my favorite. She is so kind, and she also happens to make a fabulous bag! Check out Go GaGa!

Jill's Go Gaga bags are made with rich colors, and a patented unique ergonomically designed shoulder strap really set this bag apart from other diaper bags on the market.

What is more, the Go GaGa isn't just a diaper bag. This is a purchase that is going to last you well beyond your diaper bag carrying years. Not to mention it is a bag your husband won't cringe when you ask him to carry it. In fact, you may just have to guard it or he might try to take it for his own!

You can even fit your laptop in this bag! It really has the versatility to do anything you need it to. Stroller Straps also adjust to carry a blanket for a trip to the park, or a yoga mat for class! The colors are beautiful, but also very gender neutral. (Again, watch you hubby's ladies!)

The GoGaga bag really is designed for a on-the-go life style. They are stylish, eco-friendly, and super comfortable to carry! Go Gaga has several products to choose from including The Messenger Bag (which I got to review), The Slide Tote Bag, The Gondola Bag, The Stuff Sack, and The Urban Sherpa Strap!

The Review
I choose The Go GaGa Eggplant Messenger Bag, which is made from Recycled Materials, and is seriously just beautiful!

Look how nice it looks on my stroller. What I love is it doesn't scream DIAPER BAG, which allows me to really keep my own style and not lose it just because I am a mom now. Notice how the front flap is at an angle? It was designed like that to allow you easy access to the front pockets without having to undo the clip.

One of my favorite features inside the Go GaGa bag is a foam divider that allows you to choose whether or not you want two main compartments, or one larger one. If I am using it as a diaperbag, I like to use the separation, but if I was to put my laptop inside I probably wouldn't use the foam divider.

The Go GaGa strap is absolutely amazing! It moves with you, instead of cutting into you. It doesn't put pressure against your breasts, so it is perfect for breastfeeding moms, and it spreads across your shoulder and body so it disperses the weight across your body. That allows you to wear this bag a lot longer than regular strapped bags and not feel it at the end of the day. And Dads don't worry, you can move the sliding shoulder pad up so as to give it a more masculine look.

The bag also features two insulated bottle pockets that fit not only baby bottles, but also our water bottles as well. They are angled so you only need one hand to access them. (Seriously genius, as moms we all know we rarely have two hands available anymore.)

On the Squishy rating scale, we give this an Extra Squishable. I am very impressed with the design of the entire bag. The only change I would like to see is a zippered closure for extra security when you need it. That said, it isn't easy to get into the bag when the flap is closed, but I tend to be a "nervous nelly" like that.

I would also like to note how much Philanthropic work that Jill and her company do. She works very hard to give back to many different walks of life.

Vegas Headliner ~ Emily from Mommy Made Green

I love supporting fellow Mommy Bloggers, and really love to support Mom-prenuers, so when Emily recently contacted me to see if I would be able to help her promote her fabulous new mom-owned company, I knew I would help her. Emily already rights a fabulous blog called Mommy Made Green where she writes about teaching families to raise their children on the Greener side of Life. (Obviously I think that is fantastic as we are writing about our journey going green, and her blog always has some great tips.)

Recently Emily announced her new company Mommy Secrets. What I love about her idea, is not only does it help us Greenie wannabes learn how to make the changes that help our world, but it also give moms who know a lot about Green Living and Natural Parenting an opportunity to teach others and make additional income doing what they were probably already doing anyway. So without further ado - Meet Emily Founder of Mommy Secrets!

Mommy Made Green

My company, Mommy Secrets, is a mom owned company that exists to support and educate a community of moms on the benefits of a more natural way of mothering while providing a selection of mom made products to enrich their lives as mommy.

At the core of who I am, I love helping people. I stumbled into a greener lifestyle about 5 years ago when I became very ill with an unknown illness. You can read the whole story on my blog here. When I became a mother things changed even more in our lifestyle. I wanted to give my children the healthiest lives possible, as I think all moms do. I research and researched and researched and tried out so many green products. When my oldest was about 2, all my friends were asking me how I did what I did and even sending their friends to me. One day, a good friend of mine said: "You know Emily, you really should think about starting your own business. You are teaching all these moms amazing things and then sending somewhere else to spend their money. Why not make a little extra money yourself?" And Mommy Secrets was born.

Now just over a year later and after a lot of blood, sweat, and tears Mommy Secrets is about to enter into a new place. One thing I knew right away was that I have no desire whatsoever to become another big online cloth diaper and natural parenting store. There are already so many of those and some do such an amazing job and I have no desire to compete with them. If you need a place that can help you over the phone or over email there are incredible mom owned businesses that I can fully recommend. But if you are looking for a place where you can touch, examine, and try out natural parenting items and you don't live in their town they are not really going to be able to help you. You are still going to have to pay shipping for items that may or not work for you and you still are not going to be able to talk to someone that actually uses your water type when you are having problems with your wash routine. THIS is the problem I want to solve.

So I have decided to give moms who are already doing what I was doing (converting friends to a greener lifestyle) the opportunity to make some additional income. Starting and running a business is a whole lot of work and I know many moms don't want to tackle such a task. Which is why I am not looking for moms to bring on as Green Mommy Consultants. How great would it be to be able to bring Natural Parenting items into your town? How incredible would it be to have these items readily available for moms to see in towns all across the country? If that makes you giddy inside, then you are exactly the mom I am looking for. I see this program as more than a just a business venture but also as a movement. A movement to show moms across the country that there is another way. Cloth diapers are not disgusting, breastfeeding is not something you should be ashamed, and feeding your family a wholesome diet does not have to be expensive or difficult! And the best part is I have worked very hard to design this program to be very flexible and affordable for you to get started.

If this sounds likes something you would be interested in I would love to hear from you! Simply click on the button below for more information and a link to an application. If you are a mom blogger I would love it if you could help spread the word with me. Let's start changing our nation's perspective on Natural Parenting one town at a time!

Toddler Talk ~ Week 14 (What's in your Diaper Bag)

Family and Life in Las Vegas

Welcome to week 14 of Toddler Talk Thursday! Where Family and Life in Las Vegas, Crazy about my Baybah, and My Life as a Sippy Cup Mom Talk all things Toddler!

Toddler Talk Thursday was created as a place for moms and dads of toddlers to come together over a weekly topic and share ideas, go-to toys, or products. It is a great way to meet other bloggers of toddlers. Each week the topic will be different; we invite you to link up, share your weekly Toddler Talk!!

Each week the hosts will travel around to each blog that links up, and pick an idea, story, or picture they think was a great example of that weeks topic. In order to qualify for this you need to blog about this week's topic, and follow the hosts. Comments letting us know you are participating are always great too. If we choose your blog, we will link back to your post the following week.

Our highlighted blog this week is:

Bugaboo and Peepers Too!

This week’s topic is : What's in your bag?

So what is in my diaper bag?? First let me tell you - I am not always this organized. You can often find empty wrappers, receipts, and other stuff that should be in the trash in my bag as well.

Also since I just switched over to my new Go Gaga Bag, I don't have any of my lip glosses in here either.
(psst! Stay tuned for a Go Gaga review and giveaway coming soon!!)

I also always carry a re-usable water bottle for myself, but since I wasn't heading out when I took these, it was not in my diaper bag.

(Please note I am linking up a few products not because the company asked me too, or provided me with the product. All products in my diaper bag were purchased by me. I just really really really like these products and want to share!)

In my diaper bag you will find:
