Getting Better

So after being sick for over a week, losing a pound, and just not being his normal sweet self, Kellan seems to be doing much better.  I think the medicine really helped.
This weekend was very busy - we had two 1st birthday parties to go to that we were happy to be healthy enough to do so.  It was nice getting out on the weekends, as we usually don't have too much to do, other then church (which I am still trying to find one I like).

Please enjoy some pics from our weekend.

I love his expression here - like "wow this is new!"
Kellan LOVED the ball pit - Rob and I plan on getting him one for his 1st birthday!

One more reason to get mobile....

Grandma Rocks!

With her help, my house looks more like a home, and we finally finished Kellan's nursery! Well, at least as much as we are going to do now. I plan on painting one of the walls with magnetic chalkboard paint when he gets a little older, because every child needs at least one wall to write on!

Having my Mom here has truly been awesome! In one week, she helped me unpack a whole bunch of boxes that I hadn't tackled yet for lack of time, desire, or any clue with where to put the items inside, organize my panty and my laundry room (lots of shelves), hang pictures to warm up the house, she folded laundry for me (which really was nice for me for some reason as I hate folding laundry), helped me deal with my sick baby (and even got sick herself as a result), change a couple of diapers, let me sleep in a little (hey even 20 mins is a huge plus), babysat Kellan while I got a much needed pedicure, check out a church I was thinking of joining, finish Kellan's nursery, went exploring trails behind my house for new walking paths (which I didn't want to do alone), and was overall great company and a wonderful friend to talk to! Wow! I can't believe how much we got done! I hate being so far away from all of my family, and having them come to visit is always a blessing, but I love how much closer I feel to my mom in the past couple of years, and especially now that I have Kellan. She is truly a wonderful person, and I am feel blessed to be her daughter! So now that I have officially written the longest run-on sentence ever... check out the pics!

Airplanes - even the fan is an airplane!

The wall quote I had made for Kellan's Airplane nursery.

I love the Miltary Planes Growth Chart.

More planes!

What A Wild Weekend...

It’s been a crazy weekend/week so far. My Mom came in from Minnesota last Thursday, and let me tell you, her visit was much welcomed. I love my Mom. She is such a great Mom. I have been counting days until her visit!  Kellan also loves the added attention. It was all supposed to be a laid back visit, but this has turned out not to be the case. When my Mom came in, I told her Kellan wasn’t acting like his normal smiley self. He was very closed mouth, and I attributed it to teething. Well come Saturday, he woke up warm and stuffy wish a small cough. I again thought teething… 2 hours later after throwing up from coughing, and a temperature check that revealed a 102.3 temp, we were off to Urgent Care. Except Urgent Care wouldn’t take our insurance, so we went to the ER. I was told there that Kellan had a bug, and it would pass.

While I was grateful that there wasn’t anything worse going on, it is very hard to see your baby sick and have no real reason why. Kellan spent the rest of the day throwing up after every feeding, and trying to burn off his temperature. My Mom was wonderful through all of it. She helped me with the throw-up; she calmed me down when I was nervous. She never questioned my fears. She watched Kellan so I could catch up on a little sleep (he has returned to several night feedings – which is fine because that is what he needs, but also very tiring).

Well all of a sudden my wonderful Mom comes down with exactly the same thing Kellan has – and what does she do? Um, help me organize my house. Talk about super mom! We have been trying to lay low, while at the same time, she has been trying to help me get some of my remaining boxes unpacked, and put away with creative storage solutions. If I am half the Mom she is, I will consider myself a successful mother. I love you Mom.

Kellan has started to feel better – we tried some apples and cereal to help try and bind his little poops up, but he has been very closed mouth to any food other then breast milk. Yesterday we went to a new Pediatrician, and really liked him. Their office is open 7 days a week, which is great and means unless it is an absolute emergency no more ER visits for us. Dr. said Kellan seemed to be doing much better – and even had him get his H1N1 booster shot. Today we went for a nice walk to the state park in our backyard. After our walk, Kellan decided he was going to try and Army crawl. I can’t believe how close he is to being mobile! And then we went to Target/Kohl’s/and Kirkland for more home organizing stuff. When we got home, we thought we might try to give Kellan peas, but he wouldn’t eat them, and promptly threw up everywhere again. So while he is feeling better – he is obviously not completely out of the woods. He got a nice bath, we read a book, and he went right to sleep. What a sweet baby. I love my Squishapillar, and sure hope he feels better soon. If not, I may not be kidding about that bubble in production….

This is what 3 sweet potatoes looks like....

After they have been pureed into nothing-ness! Seriously though - making your own baby food is so easy, and way more affordable than buying it. I love the fact that I know exactly what is going into my baby's body. I love how easy it is. And did I mention affordable????
The picture below contains 3 Organic Sweet Potatoes - for less than $1.00 each - so for around $3.00 I got easily 12 big servings of sweet potatoes for Kellan - which I have to believe even a serious couponer would have trouble beating...  Anyway you look at it - those seem like 3 very good reasons to make your own baby food.

(This is Kellan 'savoring' his Winter Squash from dinner tonight - we have not tried sweet potatoes yet...)

Editing to Add:  These are the books we are using to make our baby food - as well as wholesomebabyfood.com

1.
Cooking for Baby - Wholesome, Homemade, Delicious Foods for 6-18 months
2.
The Petit Appetit Cookbook - Easy Organic Recipes to Nurture your Baby and Toddler

The reason why I like these books so much is it takes you from purees through beginning finger foods, and beyond.  And as a result will hopefully open up my everyday cooking to new recipes and ideas as well!
